This made Stellest the first spectacle lens authorized by the FDA in the United States specifically for slowing the progression of pediatric myopia.

How Do Stellest Lenses Work?

Traditional single-vision glasses correct a child’s blurry distance vision, allowing them to see more clearly.

Stellest lenses take a different approach by combining regular vision correction with specialized H.A.L.T. technology, which stands for Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target.

The lenses contain a clear central area for vision correction surrounded by tiny specialized lenslets. These lenslets create a particular optical signal intended to help slow the eye growth associated with myopia progression.

To a child, however, they still function as everyday prescription glasses.

How Effective Are Stellest Lenses?

Clinical research behind Stellest lenses has produced promising results for parents exploring myopia control glasses for children.

In the two-year U.S. clinical study evaluated by the FDA, Stellest lenses demonstrated a 71% reduction in myopia progression at 24 months compared with single-vision control lenses.

The study also measured axial length, or the length of the eye. Children wearing Stellest lenses showed a 53% reduction in eye elongation at 24 months compared with the control group.

These findings are particularly significant because myopia progression is associated with the eye growing too long.

Why Is Slowing Childhood Myopia Important?

Correcting myopia allows a child to see clearly, but correcting vision and managing the progression of myopia are not necessarily the same thing.

A traditional prescription can correct the blur caused by myopia. Myopia management aims to slow how quickly the condition progresses.

The younger a child is when myopia begins, the more time there may be for it to progress while the eyes continue growing. Higher levels of myopia can also increase the risk of eye health complications later in adulthood.

That makes early diagnosis and conversations about myopia management especially important for families with nearsighted children.

Who May Be a Candidate for Stellest Lenses?

Stellest lenses may be an option for certain children who have been diagnosed with myopia.

In the United States, the FDA authorization applies to children ages 6 through 12 when treatment begins. Whether Stellest lenses are appropriate for an individual child depends on their prescription, eye health, age, and other factors that should be evaluated by an eye care professional.
